Sofa bed mattresses explained: What makes one comfortable and when to replace it
A sofa bed mattress needs to provide real sleeping comfort while working within the sofa’s design. That makes depth, foam construction and durability especially important.
What is a sofa bed mattress?
In a traditional pull-out sofa bed, the mattress is usually stored inside the mechanism, which can limit its thickness. In some fold-out designs, the mattress is not a separate piece stored inside the sofa. Instead, the foam layers are built into the sofa and unfold to create the bed.
The best mattress for a sofa bed is therefore not simply the thickest one. It needs to suit the way the sofa opens, provide enough support and cushioning, and hold its shape through repeated use.
How much does sofa bed mattress depth matter?
A deeper mattress allows more room for support and comfort layers, but thickness alone does not guarantee comfort. A luxury sofa bed with a thick mattress can still feel uncomfortable if its construction does not balance support and cushioning.
With a replacement mattress, always check the sofa bed mattress depth the mechanism can accommodate. A mattress that is too thick may prevent a traditional sofa bed from closing correctly.
What does foam density tell you?
Foam density and firmness are different. Firmness describes how soft or firm the foam feels, while density describes how much material is contained in a given volume.
Higher-density foam generally contains more material in the same volume, which can help it resist wear and hold its shape over time. Density should still be considered together with foam type, firmness and the overall mattress construction.
What makes a sofa bed mattress comfortable?
Comfort comes from balancing support with pressure relief. A supportive base helps prevent excessive sinking, while a comfort layer can adapt more closely to the body.
KHOY uses a 6 inch medium-firm polyurethane foam base with a 1.6 inch viscoelastic memory foam layer on the sleeping side. The base provides stability, while the memory foam adapts to the body and distributes pressure.

When should you replace a sofa bed mattress?
There is no single replacement schedule for every sofa bed. Visible sagging or permanent body impressions, uneven support, foam that no longer recovers properly and a clear loss of comfort can all suggest that replacement is worth considering.
If the mattress still feels supportive but its removable cover looks worn or stained, you may not need a new mattress. Removable and washable sofa bed covers explains when washing or replacing the cover may be enough.
How durable is the KHOY mattress?
KHOY’s mattress has been independently tested according to the SFS-EN 1957 standard. After 30,000 compression cycles, mattress height decreased by only 3.6%, while resilience changed only slightly.
The same 7.4 inches of dual-layer mattress construction is used across KHOY Single, KHOY Double, KHOY Queen and KHOY King, with sleeping sizes from 39.4x78.8 inches to 76x80 inches.
When choosing a sofa bed mattress, look beyond depth alone. Foam construction, durability and the balance between support and cushioning all matter, especially for regular use.
